Why our bed and breakfast is vegan

Our bed and breakfast De Groene Mus is completely vegan. This means that we do not use animal materials and that the breakfast is also completely plant-based. Ron has been a vegetarian all his life and we have both been vegan for a number of years now. We like to share our experiences with others and show and taste that vegan living is very easy and above all delicious. We are happy to tell you the how and why when you are here.

Of course everyone is welcome in our B&B, whether you are vegan or not.

First we will introduce ourselves. We are Ron van Breukelen and Ineke Buijsman. Ron is the owner of IdeeBuddy, a software company. And Ineke had a daycare before she started the B&B. Ineke will welcome you to the B&B soon.

More than 8 years ago we moved from Medemblik to Bungalowpark De Vlietlanden, in Wervershoof. We now live in a beautiful spot at the back of the park, on the water. We enjoy this beautiful place every day. We have a spacious garden with several terraces. It is wonderfully quiet and there are many different types of birds in the garden, including the kingfisher and 2 types of woodpeckers.

Why do we do this? Because we enjoy this place so much, we want to share it with other people. When Ineke stopped her daycare, we decided to start a B&B on our top floor.

Sustainability is also very important to us. We have solar panels on our house, we have a heat pump and we separate our waste. The B&B is furnished as much as possible with second-hand furniture, which we have refurbished ourselves.

The surroundings of De Groene Mus

Vegan bed and breakfast De Groene Mus is located 4 km from the beautiful town of Medemblik, near the IJsselmeer. Our B&B is located on open water, not far from the Grote Vliet.

We have a large garden by the water, with several cozy seating areas. There are many birds to spot in the garden.

Beautiful places

Beautiful, historical towns in our area, which you really should visit once; Medemblik, Opperdoes, Twisk, Enkhuizen and Hoorn. For people who want to travel a bit further; Amsterdam is 45 km from the B&B and Alkmaar 28 km. Well-known places such as Volendam, Marken and the Zaanse Schans are also within a radius of 40 km from De Groene Mus. Our B&B is located 60 km from Schiphol.

Walking

There is a beautiful and large walking area along the IJsselmeer with several beaches and places to eat and drink. The West-Frieslandpad is a 10-minute walk from the Groene Mus. From our B&B there are also several beautiful walks to make. We are happy to inform you about this.

Bicycles

In the area you can cycle beautifully, through all the beautiful towns and villages and along the IJsselmeer. West-Friesland is beautiful! And because there are many constructed cycle paths, it is perfect to cycle through.

After consultation it is possible to use two of our bicycles.

Water sports

The IJsselmeer is the place for water sports. There is a lot of sailing and surfing. In Medemblik is the Regatta center, where large sailing competitions are held. In addition to the IJsselmeer, there are many ditches and lakes in the area where you can sail. At the bungalow park where the B&B is located, whisper boats are rented.

Museums

Museums nearby include the Dutch Steam Engine Museum, the Bakery Museum, Radboud Castle and of course the Museum Steam Tram, which goes from Hoorn to Medemblik. From Medembik you can take the boat to Enkhuizen and from there take the train back to Hoorn.

Oxalis, Wervershoof: If you call in advance, they can prepare vegan dishes for you
Oost, Medemblik: Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 5:00 PM. Several vegan options on the menu including delicious sushi.
Med Trattoria, Medemblik: Open from Wednesday to Sunday. Fancy Italian? Med has vegan pizza and pasta. You do need to call in advance.
Eetcafe De Kwikkel, Medemblik: De Kwikkel has a nice terrace. Call in advance for vegan options.
Restaurant De Driemaster, Medemblik: If you call De Driemaster in advance, they can prepare delicious vegan tapas.
Restaurant Wervershoof: This restaurant is at the entrance of the park, so very close. Vegetarian is on the menu, vegan on request.

India Roti Room, Medemblik: Many (curry) dishes can be prepared vegan upon request.
Hapjes Thuis, Medemblik: This is not actually a restaurant, but a caterer. They provide vegan tapas, cakes, high tea and snack boxes. You can call in advance or order via the website.
De Post, Midwoud: Here you can order vegan Surinamese roti, among other things. It is useful to call in advance.
Café Goos, Hoorn: There are many vegan options on the menu here!
Radboud Castle, Medemblik: Excellent vegan lunch with soup and vegan sandwich.
Het Wapen van Medemblik, Medemblik : Just call in advance and they will provide a delicious lunch or dinner. This is one of the few restaurants open on Mondays.
